My name is Karen Lascelles and I am leading a project across NHS South Central (Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Hampshire and Wessex) which will be looking at how community based mental health teams work to try and prevent suicide.

Suicide is one of the top leading causes of death around the world.  The UK is working towards reducing the overall suicide rate and the recent Suicide Prevention Strategy has a particular focus on high risk groups.  People in contact with mental health services are a high risk group and the aim of this project is to make recommendations for training and practice to reduce the rate of suicide within this population across the region.

One of my key project objectives is to talk to service users who have felt suicidal or attempted suicide and carers of people who have been suicidal to find out what care and support they were offered, what was helpful and what wasn’t and what they think should be in place to help reduce suicide.

It would also be helpful to talk to carers who have lost loved ones to suicide although I understand that this may be a very painful process.

If you think you might be interested in talking to me about your experiences please contact me on 07920 275 028 or by email Karen.lascelles@oxfordhealth.nhs.uk

All information I receive from service users and carers will be made anonymous so you will not be identified in any way and there will be no expectations beyond meeting and talking.

Oxford Health NHS FT has a payment of service users and carers policy and anyone who takes part in this project by meeting with me will be reimbursed for their time and travel in line with the policy.
