Physical Disability Physiotherapy Service (PDPS)

The PDPS is a small specialist service providing physiotherapy for people with a long-term neurological disability.  It is a local community based service.  There is an emphasis on enabling patients and their carers to manage their disability in their own environment.

  • SOCA210-9572Adults over 18 years of age, registered with an Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group GP.
  • People with a long term neurological condition eg Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Motor Neurone Disease (MND), Head Injury, Cerebral Palsy, Parkinson’s Disease and Stroke.
  • People newly diagnosed with a progressive neurological condition eg MS and MND.

 

  • Provide a long-term specialist point of contact.
  • Carry out assessments to establish abilities and problems.
  • Intervention to improve function eg getting out of bed/car, walking.
  • Advice regarding management of muscle tone/spasticity.
  • Assessment for equipment eg splints, orthoses and walking aids.
  • Establish exercise/self-maintenance programmes.
  • Training of carers and/or family members.
  • Support to access local exercise and leisure facilities eg “referral to exercise scheme”.
  • Liaison and referral on to other agencies.
  • Provide six week exercise and education courses.

What are we unable to do?

  • Intervention where a rapid response is required eg chest physiotherapy.
  • Rehabilitation following a new neurological event eg Stroke.

Appointments are made to see patients in:

  • Community Hospitals.
  • Your own home.
  • Local community facilities eg gyms or day centres such as Headway.

There is open access to our service. We accept referrals from the patient, professionals or carers direct to the physiotherapist.  Unfortunately there is usually a waiting list of approximately 12-14 weeks.
