Link workers

Who are link workers?

You might be referred to a link worker as part of your journey with CAMHS.

Link workers are members of the CAMHS team, but are actually employed by voluntary sector organisations.

Since 2024 there are link workers in all of the Getting Help and Getting More Help CAMHS teams in Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire.

Help and support

What help and support might you get from a link worker?

Link workers work with children and young people to support them with things like:

Accessing activities

Accessing activities in their local communities to reduce social isolation.

For example:

  • a sports club
  • an art activity
  • a nature group
Getting help from other organisations

Getting help from other organisations if this would help to improve their mental health.

For example:

  • supporting a young person to be referred to a drug and alcohol service
  • an employment advisory service
  • to get help with managing money
Building a trusting relationship

Getting to know a young person and building a trusting relationship with them.

Particularly with young people who might find this difficult.

Accessing self-help materials

Accessing self-help materials and starting to learn about using some of the strategies these contain.

This might for example be ways of improving your sleep, low mood or anxiety.

When you might see a link worker?

Link workers work with children and young people at various points.

They might work with you:

  • While you are waiting to see a clinician from the CAMHS service.
  • At the same time as you are seeing a CAMHS clinician.
  • After you have finished seeing a CAMHS clinician and are getting ready to plan moving on from the service

Usually you will see link worker regularly for a period of a couple of months, but everyone’s circumstances are different so this might vary.
