Parent webinars

The School In-Reach team is holding several webinars for parents over the coming year. These awareness sessions contain useful information about how to support your child with some of the commonly seen emotional and mental health concerns.

These are part of our early intervention offer and therefore may not be suitable for parents of young people with more complex or established needs.

The webinar format allows parents to join from home. Cameras and microphones will be off, but questions can be asked through the Q&A function. Please note these sessions cannot be recorded for copyright purposes, but handouts can be sent on afterwards.

Understanding teenage anxiety

  • Date: Thursday 25 September 2024
  • Time: 6.00pm – 7.30pm

This presentation will explore teenage anxiety and how to talk with young people about this.

It highlights the difference between appropriate levels of anxiety and when additional help might be needed.

It explores what might keep anxiety going and provides an overview of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy as well as a number of useful techniques which parents can use to support their child.

Exam stress and anxiety

  • Date: Wednesday 23 October 2024
  • Time: 6.00 – 7.30pm

This presentation is aimed at parents and their teenagers in the run-up to mocks and other school exams.

We will look at the brain and what happens when we get anxious and stressed and some ways of recognising our states of mind and how useful this can be for exams.

We will also address getting the balance right between exam preparation and other activities, and preparing for life after exams.

Supporting young people who self-harm

  • Date: Thursday 28 November 2024
  • Time: 6.00 – 7.30pm

This awareness session explores what self-harm is and how it might present in teenagers.

It looks at why young people might self-harm and helps to challenge commonly held assumptions.

The session includes support around how to talk to your young person, dealing with your own feelings and supporting teenagers with alternative strategies.

Promoting resilience

  • Date: Thursday 30 January 2025
  • Time: 12.30 – 2.00pm

In this session we cover well-being and resilience and look to develop understanding of the importance of resilience in managing the challenges and conflicts in life.

The session explores ideas about the brain, feelings and thoughts to promote resilience and utilises practical and visual resources to provide a shared language to describe emotions and mental health in everyday ways.

Understanding the teen brain

  • Date: Tuesday 25 February 2025
  • Time: 6.00 – 7.30pm

We know that, other than during the first three years of life, the brain goes through the biggest change in its development during adolescence.

This is a critical time in teens’ lives, and we have a crucial role to play in helping to guide and develop them to grow into happy and successful adults.

The session covers the main changes in the brain during the teenage years relating to: hormones, risky behaviour, the social brain, sleep and the role of parents/carers and other adults.

Sleep awareness for parents

  • Date: Wednesday 12 March 2025
  • Time: 6.00 – 7.30pm

This session, to coincide with wider sleep promotion work taking place in schools over the month, will focus on the importance of sleep, especially for teenagers.

The changes in the brain, hormones, recovery and rest which is vital for young people, and how we can work to prioritise our need for sleep over other distractions and develop healthy sleep habits.

Childhood anxiety (for primary/transition)

  • Date: Wednesday 4 June 2025
  • Time: 6.00 – 7.30pm

This session is aimed at managing anxiety in children under 12.

It highlights when anxiety might be a problem (as opposed to a ‘normal’ developmental phase), describes different anxiety disorders and how these can be recognised and discussed.

It explores why treatment is important and gives a detailed overview of a Cognitive Behaviour Therapy approach aimed at parents.
