Our services

The Highfield Unit Oxford provides inpatient care for service users in the most acute and vulnerable stage of their illness.

The purpose is to offer care and safety for young people who require:

  • a safe and supportive environment whilst they are in the most acute and vulnerable stage of their illness.
  • an assessment of mental health needs.
  • treatment: a range of interventions will be considered for young people including medication, individual and group psychological therapies and family support as recommended by the NICE guidance, and dependant on clinical need.
  • a safe and nurturing environment during the time away from parents or carers which includes provision of recreational facilities and access to education.
  • access to professionally qualified staff 24 hours a day, seven days a week offering skilled mental and physical health care.
  • an interactive and sociable environment where everyday communication between young people and staff is encouraged.

The Highfield staff are also committed to

  • multi-disciplinary and inter-agency working. This is central to providing comprehensive care within a multi-disciplinary whole systems approach.
  • young people and their families or carers being kept informed and involved in collaborative planning and the review of all aspects of patient care.

Service model

Treatment and interventions are provided using the lowest intensity that is effective for every young person.  The Highfield Unit provides three levels of intervention:

  • Day patient: with provision of a structured timetable and  support
  • Inpatient
  • High Dependency: with more intensive support
