Training opportunities

The Psychological Perspectives in Primary (PPIP) Care programme offers professional, evidence-based training and development opportunities in advanced clinical consultation skills and CBT techniques to doctors, nurses and other health and social care professionals.

The training sessions are RCGP Accredited and can form part of your Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

The Toolkit modules are stand-alone, therefore you can choose to have one or more delivered. Each module will cover relevant evidence-based techniques, as well as guidance on how these techniques can be integrated within routine clinical practice within the primary care setting.

3. Problem Solving techniques

4. Behavioural Activation techniques

The PPIP Care ‘10-Minute CBT’ Skills Master Classes include 5 training modules covering CBT skills and interventions in more depth than the toolkit modules. Each module is delivered in a 3-hour session and is supported by a training DVD which demonstrates use of the models and techniques. These longer training sessions teach a wide range of interventions that can be used in a standard 10-minute patient appointment for those with mental health problems, long term physical health problems and those patients suffering with health anxiety and medically unexplained symptoms.

The training sessions are RCGP Accredited and can form part of your Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Module 1: Introduction to the CBT model and consultation skills – this module is a pre-requisite for attending any of the following modules

Module 3: Clinical applications: Anxiety and Panic

Module 4: Physical Health and Long-term Conditions

Module 5: Health Anxiety and Medically Unexplained Symptoms

This training is delivered in a 2-hour session and will introduce staff to a variety of tools and approaches that can help professionals nourish themselves and develop a sense of wellbeing in the midst of their busy lives. Session includes approaches like: 5 ways to wellbeing, relaxation techniques, cognitive and behavioural tools, as well as mindfulness meditations.


An online IAPT course which supports GPs and other primary care practitioners in caring for people with common mental health problems. It consists of approximately 2 hours of e-learning activities and formative self-assessments to facilitate learning and reflection. Links to further resources including reading and activities are also provided.

The course was developed in partnership with the IAPT National Primary Care Programme and the RCGP and is provided free of charge.
