Ethos
In FNP we focus on yours and your families strengths. Working alongside you and being guided by your needs we use this strength-based approach to support you to:
- Develop good relationships with and understand your child’s needs
- Make choices that will give your child the best possible start in life
- Believe in yourself and your ability to succeed
- Mirror the positive relationship you have with your family nurse with others.
Working together
We believe that working together from pregnancy, getting to know one-another and building a good relationship is very important.
We think that this relationship and trust allows us to support you to think about what’s working well, things might be more challenging, and to make a plan about how we can support you in these areas.
Your Family Nurse will listen to you, help you to problem solve and offer advice and guidance when needed.
Our foundation
FNP is underpinned by three theories:
- Human ecology theory – emphasising the impact of social context and environment on human development
- Attachment theory – emphasizing the importance of the security and safety that comes from a relationship with a primary caregiver to a child’s healthy emotional development
- Self-efficacy theory – nurses use this concept to guide their efforts in supporting positive change, enabling clients to understand why particular actions are important and to develop the confidence necessary to achieve these.
The programme
FNP is a licensed programme
The programme was originally developed over 45 years ago in America by Professor David Olds. It is delivered in England under licence from the University of Colorado Denver. The licence is held in England by the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care.
