GP Assistant Wessex pilot
Published: 28 August, 2019
The GP Assistant (GPA) is a new role being created in order to relieve some of the pressure on GPs. GPAs (also known as Medical Assistants) support doctors in the smooth running of their surgery by handling the routine administration and some basic clinical duties enabling the GP to focus on the patient.
Following a national pilot, Wessex Primary Care Training Hubs are making funding available for ten HCAs currently employed in general practice in Wessex to become GP Assistants (GPAs). The GPA framework is an experiential training, academically backed up by a level 3 apprenticeship. The funding will be available to HCAs who have the appropriate knowledge and skills.
