Helping patients in distress briefly

Many patients present to primary care in emotional distress. Brief behavioural interventions offered in primary care can reduce distress in the moment and may confer longer term benefits, as well as improving relationships with patients and job satisfaction for the GP. A BMJ Practice Pointer presents a step by step approach for non-specialists to use in their consultation with patients in distress whether or not they are taking psychiatric medications.
