NHS Health Check now includes dementia advice

New NHS Health Check data shows that more than 14 million people have been offered an NHS Health Check but only more than 7 million take up the offer. Public Health England analysis analysis has found that over the next three years more than 9,000 heart attacks and at least 14,000 strokes could be prevented through better detection and management of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and atrial fibrillation.

Advice on dementia risk has been introduced as as part of NHS Health Checks to enable healthcare professionals to talk to their patients about how they can reduce their dementia risk, such as by maintaining their social life, keeping mentally and physically active and stopping smoking.

A training tool for health professionals carrying out an NHS Health Check is available online and a new e-learning resource for practitioners is also available.
