This July patients and staff of Wintle Ward have been working together to create an original piece of art to raise awareness of the ward’s vision:

“Wintle Ward strives to be welcoming, helpful, communicative and informative,

…..with a friendly, respectful, efficient and competent team,

…..in an environment that is safe, well organised, clean and tidy.”

The project was organised with guidance from Tom Cox of Artscape, who suggested staff should take their inspiration from the many textile crafts that are already enjoyed on the ward.  A commissioned local textile artist helped the team turn their vision into art.

Over the course of a morning and an afternoon, staff and patients produced an array of felt squares featuring colours, patterns and words that represented the Wintle Ward vision.

In total it took several sessions over seven days to create the ward’s artwork, with patients, staff and students participating. All contributions were important – those who did not feel able to get practically involved gave advice on how the patches should be arranged, or how the final piece could be displayed.

Feedback was collected from as many participants as possible.  Everyone agreed that the project had raised awareness of the ward vision, as well as providing an opportunity for staff and patients to build relationships in a different way.  Participants also reported that they had felt a sense of achievement and were motivated to join in future activities.  One patient described the project as “fun” and noted that it had provided a “good distraction from negative feelings”. Another stated they had “gained a new skill for which I am grateful”, noting that that it had “created a positive atmosphere between staff and other patients”.

The group’s final step is deciding which wall of the lounge the artwork should be displayed.
