Tom Burns, Professor of Social Psychiatry, has been awarded a CBE for services to mental health in the Honours List published in June, to mark the Queen’s official 80th birthday.
Professor Burns is Chair of Social Psychiatry in the University of Oxford. He has clinical responsibilities in Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust, most prominently as the previous Clinical Director for the adult services, and is based at the Warneford Hospital site.
Professor Burns has been with the Trust for three years, and his area of expertise is in ensuring best possible care for individuals with severe mental illness, particularly in their community care.
Speaking about the award, he said, “I am delighted over the award, particularly as I’ve been preoccupied all my professional life with local services for local people, rather than national initiatives. Good psychiatry is a team activity and I’ve been enormously lucky with my colleagues both in London and here in Oxford where I’ve worked as consultant psychiatrist and as clinical director.’
