The service provides dietetic expertise and support to a wide range of patients across Oxfordshire.

Their patients include adults and children who are tube-fed both in their own home and care or nursing homes. The team also provides therapeutic dietary advice to the wider population such as diabetes, gastroenterology, cows milk protein allergy and other paediatric food intolerances, pulmonary rehabilitation, learning disabilities and much more.

The community dietetic team is currently made up of ten clinical staff and three admin staff with a remit to cover the primary nutritional care demands across Oxfordshire.

The team is usually based at East Oxford Health Centre, but since the Covid outbreak many members of the team have been working from home. The service has stepped up to the digital age with great gusto being one of the services to embrace digital consultations delivering 299 in the first year.

A foster carer said: “I was treated as a fellow professional. I was given good quality information and provided with the opportunity to ask questions.”

Dawn Goudge, Team Lead, said “The team has remained positive and proactive, responding to the rapidly changing demands on the service during the last 18 months. We have seen a huge shift in clinical delivery from face to face to digital consultations and patients groups which has enabled a more focused and efficient use of our clinical skill set while maintaining excellent patient care.

“I am proud of the team, their cooperation, flexibility, professionalism and good humour, delivering all that’s been asked of them. As we continue into the recovery phase, the community dietetic team continue to build on these new developments and initiatives, to ensure ongoing safe, responsive, effective, and excellent nutritional patient care”

Another patient said: “My experience with an online consultation was definitely worth the wait. The consultant I saw was patient and thorough in her approach and didn’t make me feel like we had to rush through a mountain of information.

“We progressed through the key issues I have been facing in a professional yet comforting manor. I have a clear set of goals/ changes to make and then a follow up appointment has been made to check my progress. I feel supported and well looked after.”

A further service user said: “I was very happy for the time and guidance that I received during the appointment, I felt like the advice given was very personal and accurate to help me.”

A final reviewer said: “My experience of the care and expertise given is one of commitment, care, compassion, support and knowledge. No difficult subjects avoided. Thank you very much.”
