School based mental health programmes to prevent anxiety and depression in children and young people By Professor Paul Stallard
By the age of 18 approximately 20% of children and young people will have experienced an emotional disorder of anxiety or depression. Whilst effective interventions are available comparatively few children are identified and referred for specialist treatment. This has encouraged interest in preventive approaches whereby children are taught mental health skills in schools to prevent emotional health problems from developing.
Professor Paul Stallard will provide an overview of school based emotional health programmes and will summarise key findings and challenges from two large scale prevention programmes he is currently leading.
