Staff from Cherwell Ward share their knowledge and skills in working with older adults with dementia

Dr Svetlana Hemsley, locum consultant, and Lisa Kinahan, registered nurse, from Cherwell Ward at the Fullbrook Centre presented a training session on the 20 June to the staff from the Paradigm Housing Association in Buckinghamshire. This follows on from Dr Hemsley’s recent talk on dementia ‘Aging gracefully’, in association with Buckinghamshire Mind, and has raised £400 donated by Paradigm Housing Association to the Cherwell Fund. This generous donation will be used to provide art materials and gardening equipment for patients occupational therapy treatment on Cherwell Ward.

The team from Paradigm Housing Association, who care for elderly and vulnerable adults, learnt about the dementia journey including communication, emotions and daily living difficulties, as well as the support available for risks, including the risk of falls.

Following the talk the group were invited to take part in a Cognitive Stimulation Group (CST) workshop which aims to actively stimulate and engage people with dementia whilst also providing a learning environment coupled with the social benefits of a being in a group.

Dr Hemsley has recently been elected a Public Education Officer for South Eastern Division at Royal College of Psychiatrists and is a member of the Psychiatrist’s Public Education Editorial Board where she continues to share her work in older adult mental health at Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust with the wider community in a variety of ways including public talks.
