About the speaker

Dr Brian Nyatanga is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Worcester, England, UK. He has worked in the NHS, independent hospices and palliative care settings for the past three decades. He is also a visiting senior academic at Edith Cowan University, Perth, Western Australia.

Brian was born in Rhodesia, which later became Zimbabwe after Independence from British rule in 1980. He grew up on a farm and enjoyed life with his Christian family of 11 siblings – so, used to sharing and caring. His early life involved walking long distances everywhere; primary school, church, playing sports, having a bath in the river, and family gatherings.

Brian moved to the UK in 1986 to train as a nurse, and then specialised in palliative care culminating in a doctoral PhD in 2011. Brian was one of 14 Lecturers who developed the unique Macmillan National Institute of Education (MNIE), a joint venture with seven universities, and he was based at Birmingham City University, advising and commentating on the Department of Health’s consultation papers on palliative care related issues.

In 2013, Brian developed a Centre for Palliative Care and became the Centre’s Lead for 6 years, conducting research projects. He trained as an accredited advanced communication skills facilitator for the NHS ‘Connected’ program, and trained health care professionals in the UK, The Netherlands, Czech Republic, Kenya and Australia.

Brian has published extensively in nursing press since 1988 including books and book chapters on palliative care topics. He is currently the Consultant Editor of the International Journal of Palliative Nursing. He is often asked to review research bids, journal articles submitted for publication and to present at both national and international conferences.
