Contraception and sexual health
School health nurses offer support and advice to older students on a range of issues including sexual health and contraception:
- Sexual health advice;
- Emergency contraception, pills, patch, injection and the implant;
- Free condoms under the C-Card Safety Scheme;
- Chlamydia and gonorrhoea screening;
- Chlamydia treatment;
- Pregnancy testing and advice about unplanned pregnancy.
We work to promote healthy and age-appropriate behaviours, so that young people are equipped to make safe, healthy and informed decisions. As nurses, we adhere to our Code of Conduct (Nursing and Midwifery Council) and practice within UK Government policies and guidelines.
School health nurses provide a confidential service for young people. We would only pass on any information in order to protect someone from serious harm. Whenever possible, we would discuss any breaches in confidentiality with the young person first. School health nurses encourage young people to talk to their parents. Importantly, school health nurses also work with parents/carers and younger children, where necessary.
