Referral criteria

PCAMHS treat children and young people at the early onset of emotional and mental health difficulties. We might be able to help a child or young person if they are worried about their mental or emotional wellbeing.

There are many things which may affect a child or young person day to day – a few examples include:

  • fear of any particular situation or object which stops them doing things they enjoy
  • feeling very anxious or worried
  • feeling very sad or down
  • feeling they have to complete certain routines otherwise they feel upset
  • becoming angry easily, which affects their mood
  • harming or thinking of harming themself

CAMHS teams work with children and young people where there is an indication of serious mental health including:

  • psychosis
  • bipolar disorder
  • depression
  • anxiety / neurotic disorders
  • eating disorders – anorexia nervosa with a BMI of 15-17 or where there are signs of bulimia nervosa with frequent bingeing and compensatory behaviour
  • ADHD with a co-morbidity of any of the above
  • ASD with a co-morbidity of any of the above
  • emerging personality difficulties with a co-morbidity of any of the above
  • conduct disorders with a co-morbidity of any of the above

Referrals process

Emergency referrals
Where a child poses an immediate danger to themselves or others, these are dealt with within 24 hours of receipt. If in hours, Monday-Friday, 09.00-17.00, please call us straight away on 01865 902515. If out of hours, professionals please call 01865 901 000 and ask for CAMHS crisis on call (young people or parents/carers should call 111).

Urgent referrals
These are seen within 7 days. We triage all referrals, but if you have particular concerns about a case or are not sure of its clinical priority, we urge you to call us the single point of access number, 01865 902515.

Standard referrals
GPs please use the referral form on your GP system.
Other professionals are asked to complete an Oxfordshire CAMHS Comprehensive Referral form and email it to us at Oxfordhealth.oxonCAMHSSPA@nhs.net. Please ensure that this contains sufficient information for us to screen the referral appropriately, and that the child, young person and family or carers have given their consent to opt into treatment and to share their personal information.

Information for GPs

1. OUT OF HOURS

Out of hours, GPs please call 01865 901 000 and ask for CAMHS crisis on call (young people or parents / carers should call 111).

2. IN HOURS (EMERGENCY, URGENT OR ROUTINE)?

In hours, if a child poses an immediate danger to themselves or others, please call us straight away on 01865 902515 – we will deal with this as an Emergency (within 24 hours of receipt of referral).

In hours, if you have particular concerns about a case or are not sure of its clinical priority, call us on 01865 902515 as well– we triage all referrals, and Urgent referrals are seen within 7 days.

3. SAFEGUARDING

If you have concerns relating to a child’s welfare, it is your duty to refer the child to social services and you should do this promptly, notwithstanding any need they have to also be referred to CAMHS (which is a separate referral): you can refer by emailing us at

4. EATING DISORDERS

There is no BMI below which a child has to go before a referral would be considered.  If a child has suspected eating disorder, to ensure the greatest chance of therapeutic success we encourage early consultation or referral (including information on height, weight, pulse and blood pressure).
