Difficult life events, past experiences or ongoing stresses can lead us to think negatively. This can mean we stop things we used to enjoy and in turn feel low and hopeless about change. Often these feelings pass with time. However if they last more than a few months and start to affect how we get along day to day then they may be a sign of depression.
Depression affects people in different ways. Some common issues include difficulties with sleep, restlessness and appetite changes, tearfulness, feelings of sadness or guilt, problems with concentration, irritability, loss of sex drive and withdrawal from others.
