Living with Long-Term Physical Health Conditions
If you are living with a long-term physical health condition (LTC) you are two to three times more likely to experience anxiety and/or depression. These conditions include Coronary Heart Disease (CHD), Diabetes, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)/ME.
Some of the symptoms of anxiety and/or depression may also be symptoms linked with your physical health conditions.
Psychological problems as a result of your long-term physical health condition can have a significant effect on: quality of life, health happiness, impact on day to day ability to cope and live with the condition, affect relationships, housing issues, financial problems or employment.

- Worrying often
- Feeling wound up and unable to relax
- Trouble sleeping (too much, too little, broken nights)
- Feeling low and helpless
- Tired or lacking in energy
- Difficulty concentrating

- Feeling overwhelmed (“this is too much”)
- Increased irritability, poor communication and conflict within your most intimate relationships
These symptoms, which most people experience from time to time, can be a sign that you are having difficulties with low mood or anxiety. It might be difficult for you to image that you could feel differently, given the challenges you are facing or the situation you find yourself in.

How can TalkingSpace Plus help?
TalkingSpace Plus offers therapies that are known to be effective for many people with long-term physical health conditions.
We can offer you the chance to help yourself to cope with the emotional challenges linked to long-term physical health problems, feel better and learn your own strategies for keeping well. We do this by providing a range of services including:
- Telephone support
- Information sessions and group work
- Individual cognitive behavioural therapy
- Counselling for depression
- Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy
- Information and signposting to other services
- Wellbeing Activities
We recognise the additional challenges people living with such conditions may face and have specially trained clinicians who work with people with long term- physical health conditions and worry, anxiety or low mood.
We also work with other health care providers to ensure you will have joined up care and can help patients support any family member or carers, who may also be affected by your health problems.
