CBT for Carers Group February 2019

TalkingSpace Plus will be running a group for people who are caring for a friend or relative who has dementia.

What is CBT for carers?

Most carers of people with dementia experience feelings of burden and stress from time to time.

CBT stands for ‘Cognitive Behavioural Therapy’ and is an approach used to help people understand how their thoughts, feelings and behaviour are linked. It can help reduce feelings of stress and/or low mood.

Who is the CBT for carers group for?

The group is for carers of any age who are:

  • Caring for someone with a diagnosed dementia
  • Feeling stressed and/or experiencing low mood
  • Looking for ways of managing stress and/or low mood
  • Looking for ideas to care more effectively for their relative or friend

 What does the group cover?

  • Stress management
  • Coping with difficult thoughts and emotions
  • Ideas to help you care for your relative as effectively as possible, for as long as possible
  • Understanding dementia and your reaction to it
  • Identifying helpful ways of interacting with your relative to reduce your feelings of stress, distress and/or low mood
  • Identifying ways of responding when your relative is distressed and coping with the behaviour you find most difficult

You will also meet other carers and be able to share ideas and experiences of caring for someone with dementia.

How long will this group run for?

The group will run for 12 weeks.

When and where is this group?

The group will run weekly on Tuesday afternoons from 2pm to 3.30pm, starting on the 5th February 2019 at West Oxford Community Centre, Oxford.

Groups and Courses for early 2019

Improve Your Mood and Manage Your Anxiety Courses for & early 2019

One of the quickest and easiest ways to access support through TalkingSpace is to attend a Step 2 short course. These courses aim to add to your understanding of depression or anxiety and teach practical coping skills. We run them monthly at various locations. When you attend, you can join in as much or as little as you like – there’s no expectation for you to speak in the group if you don’t feel comfortable.
If you are interested in attending a course, the first step is to complete a referral for the TalkingSpace service and book your telephone consultation – click here.
