How will the Diabetes2gether course benefit me?

Both our courses are delivered by a nurse educator and dietician who aim to give you the confidence, knowledge and skills you will need to manage your diabetes in partnership with your GP and practice nurse. We believe in putting you at the centre of your condition allowing you to live well with diabetes.

Why have I been invited to attend Diabetes2gether?

Most people invited to our Diabetes2gether course will have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in the last 12 months and be managing their diabetes with either diet alone or diet and metformin. Read more about this course here: (?link to leaflet)

Why have I been invited to attend Diabetes4ward?

Most people invited to our follow on course, Diabetes4ward, will have been living with diabetes for more than 12 months and will be managing their diabetes with a more complex regime of medication including insulin. Read more about our courses here

I’ve attended a course. What happens next?

We encourage you to take the skills, tools and knowledge you have learnt during the session back to your surgery to discuss with your GP or practice nurse. We hope that in doing this you will be able to form a partnership with them empowering you to manage your diabetes well.

Is there parking at the venue?

We run our courses at different venues across the county so this will vary depending on each of them. There is free parking at most venues but if this is not the case we will inform you in your invite letter of alternative parking options. Alternatively if you would like to speak to someone about this please contact our education administrators on diabetes.education@nhs.net or 01865 903 380.

How do I get a place on a course?

You can self refer to our service; just call us on 01865 903 380 any weekday between 8.30am and 4.30pm or email us diabetes.education@nhs.net. You can also book a course online here.

You’ll get a text reminder before the session.

Or you can ask your GP or nurse to refer you to us if you don’t want to approach us first. Ask them to visit our clinicians tab.

I’ve already attended a D2G. How long before I can attend a D4W?

Our follow-on course, Diabetes4ward, is designed for people who have had type 2 diabetes for longer than 12 months or who are managing their diabetes with a more complex medication regime including insulin.

I did the session a few years ago. Can I still attend?

Yes. Diabetes is an area which is always changing. The latest research means we are discovering new information and treatments all the time. It is therefore worth coming along for an update as you are always likely to learn something new which may help you better manage your diabetes.

If you would like to attend another session please ask your GP or practice nurse to refer you for a refresher.

I’ve lost my information booklet. How can I get another one?

If you have attended a session and misplaced your information pack we would be very happy to send you another booklet in the post. Please call our educator administrator on 01865 903 380 or email them on diabetes.education@nhs.net to request this with your name and which session you attended.

Do I need to bring anything on the day?

No. Just yourself and a willingness to learn. We will provide you with everything you need for the session including an information booklet with the session slides and useful resources which you can take home.

What if I struggle in groups?

If  you struggle in group situations with people you don’t know, don’t worry. The session is still suitable for you. We try to make the sessions as interactive as possible however you can choose to participate as much or as little as you feel comfortable with. Our educators are friendly and approachable so if you have any concerns before the session be sure to speak to one of us and we will try to accommodate you as best we can.

I’m hard of hearing. Can I still attend?

Yes of course. And we would advise you to bring along a person who can support you.

How long will the session last and is there a break?

The Diabetes2gether course runs for three hours with a 10-15 minute break halfway through allowing time to grab a refreshment, go to the toilet and chat with the educators and fellow participants if you wish.

Our follow on course Diabetes4ward goes into more detail and therefore runs for 3.5hours with a 10 -15 minute break. This allows us to cover all the information whilst ensuring there is enough time for your questions to be answered in enough detail throughout the course and at the end.

I can’t make my session anymore. How do I cancel and rearrange?

Just call us on 01865 903 380 any weekday between 8.30am and 4.30pm and we will make the arrangements for you.

What if I’m a carer for somebody living with diabetes?

If you are caring for someone with type 2 diabetes and would like to improve your knowledge we would welcome you to either of our sessions even if they are not able to attend with you.
