Matt said:

“I really wasn’t expecting to be nominated for this award let alone win it. It means a real lot to me. It is always nice to get recognised by fellow colleagues within the Trust for the work I have done, but I could not do it without the support of my team and fellow Estates colleagues. I would also like to thank Gemma Pugh for nominating me for this award”.

The nomination

Nominated by colleague Head of Transformation Gemma Pugh, Matt brings a sense of humour and lightness to every situation, creating a positive and supportive work environment. He has taken on numerous complex projects that need urgent attention, often requiring a full reset and significant problem-solving within very tight timescales. His dedication and work ethic go far beyond expectations, always with a clear focus on patients and service users. Examples this year include his project management leadership of Murray House, Luther Street Medical Centre, Wantage and Witney. We know he often has competing projects on other sites – but when you are with him, you always feel that you are the priority.

Gemma commented:

“Matt consistently upholds the values of caring, safe and excellent in everything he does. A visible and approachable leader, he communicates clearly and compassionately with staff and users, always ensuring information is understood by all. He raises concerns proactively when he identifies building issues that may impact care, even when they aren’t immediately obvious to clinical teams.

“Matt’s ability to adapt his language and approach ensures everyone feels respected and heard – there are no ‘silly questions’ with Matt. Drawing on his broad experience across multiple sites, he gently offers suggestions and improvements, giving teams confidence they are in safe, capable hands.

“Matt has made a significant and lasting difference to patients, carers and customers through his thoughtful, inclusive approach to refurbishment and design. He consistently puts his own preferences for design and interior finishes aside, prioritising the voices of clinical teams and diverse patient user groups to ensure that every environment reflects the needs of those who use it.

“Matt goes beyond the physical aspects of design and not only considers just functionality, but how a space feels. His work creates welcoming, safe environments that support dignity, comfort and accessibility for all, regardless of ability or background. By balancing the technical side of design with softer, human-centred touches Matt ensures refurbished spaces truly serve the people in them. His work doesn’t just change spaces – it improves experiences. Examples include redesigning shower spaces to ensure we have disabled staff access at Murray House and new spaces such as large disabled changing spaces for people visiting Wantage Community Hospital.”
