Andrew Smith MP formally opening the Thames Valley Initiative Complex Needs Service
Andrew Smith MP planted a tree and unveiled a plaque to formally open the Thames Valley Initiative Complex Needs Service on 20th September 2006 at its premises on Manzil Way Oxford.
The Complex Needs Service is run by Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust. Eleven mental health Trusts nationwide piloted these services from set-up, and five of those, including Oxfordshire’s service, have gained future funding.
Andrew said: “The Complex Needs Service’s success is a tribute to the hard work of all its staff and the strength of its approach. The service’s opening today marks the long term security of an excellent scheme, which I am sure will help many more people in the future.”
People referred to the service, which was set up in 2003, have personality disorders, which range from severe histories of self harm, attempted suicide, relationship problems, anger, and often traumatic personal histories which can lead to unstable housing, drug and alcohol abuse and unemployment. The service works closely with voluntary sector partners, and aims to treat personality disorders through a therapeutic community of members.
Chief Executive Julie Waldron said “I am very proud to have a complex needs service in Oxfordshire treating some difficult and historically long term emotional or mental health difficulties. The team here has come a long way in three short years, and have improved the mental health and wellbeing of many people who have used this service.
