The Oral Health Promotion Team is part of the Community Dental Service. They play a vital role in improving oral health awareness and education across our communities, recognising oral hygiene is an essential part of wellbeing, including mental health. The team’s work focuses on preventative care, education, and accessibility, equipping both healthcare professionals and the public with the knowledge and tools needed to maintain healthy mouths.
Advanced Health Improvement Practitioner for the Community Dental Service Elizabeth Sherry said:
“We were completely surprised to hear that the Oral Health team had been nominated for the Exceptional People Team Awards and amazed to be fortunate to win. Thank you.
“We feel very humbled and honoured to have received this award in recognition of the Oral Health Promotion and Improvement work we do for Oxfordshire Community Dental Service, especially as we are such a small team. We are passionate about sharing Oral Health messages and reaching out to all members of the community within Oxfordshire.
“We are continually looking at ways to improve our service to meet the needs of those we work with.”
The nomination
The Oral Health Promotion Team was nominated by their colleague Senior Programme Manager for Community Dental Service Peter Loomes – for their dedication to patients and continuous efforts to raise awareness of oral health.
Peter commented:
“The impact of the Oral Health Promotion Team extends across patients, staff, and carers. For patients and service users, their work has improved oral health awareness and empowered individuals to take charge of their own dental care – leading to better overall health outcomes. In one area of high deprivation, where improving oral health is particularly challenging, the team’s efforts contributed to a 5% reduction in decay rates in one of its recent contracts, demonstrating the effectiveness of their targeted interventions. Their materials ensure that people from all backgrounds, including vulnerable groups, receive guidance suited to their specific needs.
“Through targeted initiatives, training sessions, and tailored resources, they address the needs of diverse populations. They collaborate with schools, care homes, healthcare providers, and local organisations to embed oral health into wider health strategies. Their work not only helps prevent issues such as tooth decay and gum disease but also highlights the crucial links between oral health and general health, including mental wellbeing.”
“For colleagues, the team has provided invaluable support by integrating oral health into wider care pathways. Through training sessions, resources, and awareness campaigns, they have equipped staff with the knowledge and tools to promote oral health in their daily practice. This not only enhances patient care but also fosters a culture where oral health is recognised as a key component of holistic wellbeing. Carers and family members have also benefited, receiving clear and practical advice on how to support their loved ones’ oral health, making daily routines safer and more effective. The team’s work has had a lasting, positive impact on the Trust, reinforcing a preventative approach to healthcare and improving quality of life for many.”
