Medical prescribing

Clinical evidence

There is not a large evidence base for pharmacological treatments for Eating Disorder, with the predominant treatments being psychological.

However, there is some evidence for the use of Fluoxetine in reducing the urge to binge eat in patients with Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder.

There is also some evidence for use of low dose Olanzepine in patients with low weight Anorexia Nervosa.

Psychiatric reviews

The ACED doctors can offer psychiatric reviews to see if there are any mental health comorbidities contributing to the Eating Disorder.

We will evaluate whether treatment with one of the few evidence based pharmacological interventions for Eating Disorder might be helpful.

We might also commence prescription of nutritional supplements and vitamins.

Prescription management

We do not take over prescribing for patients and will sometimes commence medications but ask the GP to continue prescribing when a steady dose has been established.

We also do not offer reviews for medication prescribed elsewhere or general psychiatric reviews which are not related to the Eating Disorder symptoms.
