Understanding ADHD and learning the art of getting things done

Getting things done

Getting things done can be hard, especially for people with ADHD who have trouble with executive functioning.

Executive dysfunction happens when the brain has trouble planning, focusing, or finishing tasks.

This is because the parts of the brain that help with decision-making and self-control aren’t working as well as they should.

Helpful tools

There are tools that can make life easier for people with ADHD.

  • Some tools can help with staying organised and finishing tasks.
  • Other tools can help with managing emotions.

Approaches

Some approaches include:

Cognitive Behavioural Behaviour (CBT)

CBT and Life coaching explains that a difficult situation is usually not the actual problem; it’s how we think and act in the situation.

CBT techniques help us see things from a different perspective, simplify complex tasks and use compensatory strategies to get boring as well as meaningful things done.

ADHD medication

ADHD medication can sometimes be prescribed to help manage symptoms such as difficulty focusing, impulsivity, and hyperactivity.

However, it is important to understand that medication does not work for everyone.

Even when it is effective, it is not a “magic bullet” that instantly enables someone to function at a high level all the time.

Therapy / emotional support

People with ADHD often face additional emotional challenges and difficulties in their relationships.

A recognised therapy, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), may be helpful in managing these challenges.

ADHD strategies / tips

Many people with ADHD symptoms can significantly enhance their day-to-day functioning through the practice and use of different tips and strategies.

See the skills section to learn more.

Apps and technology

There are many apps and technological tools designed to help individuals with ADHD improve their executive functioning skills.

ADHD coaching

Some individuals find it beneficial to access ADHD coaching as a means of support. This is a relatively new (and unregulated) field, but many speak highly of the benefits of ADHD coaching.
