Problem solving

Using problem solving for real world issues during thinking time

Step 1: break down the problem

Say what the problem is

Frame it in a way that focuses on facts, not emotions.

Find out why it’s happening

Look for causes without blaming anyone.

Choose what to do next

  • Solve it now: if it’s important and you have what you need.
  • Solve it later: if you need more time or help.
  • Let it go: if fixing it isn’t worth the effort.

Step 2: brainstorming without judgement

  • Think of at least 5 solutions.
  • Ask other people who you trust for ideas.

Step 3: judge and pick

Rate all solutions from 0-10 and just pick one good enough (not the perfect) solution.

Step 4: plan and act

Plan a 5 step action plan and take action.

Step 5: monitor and adapt

Monitor the results, and pick second good enough solution if first one found not working.
