Techniques to help empty the bladder

Instructions for exercises

  1. Lean forward
    Lean forward slightly and wait for a few seconds. Sit back up and note what happens.
  2. Lean back
    Lean back slightly and wait for a few seconds. Sit up again or tap gently, then note what happens.
  3. Tap briskly
    Tap briskly (8 times) above the pubic bone, and note what happens.
  4. Stand up
    Stand up, with or without bending. Note what happens.
  5. Shimmy
    Move around as comfortably as you can, then sit back down. Note what happens.
  6. Pelvic floor muscle squeeze
    Squeeze the pelvic floor muscles, hold for a few seconds, and then release. Note what happens.
  7. Scoop
    Using a tissue in your hand, lift your “undercarriage” up and forward towards the front. Note what happens.

Vary the order

Try varying the order of these exercises after each time you pass urine for about 3 days.

Repeat the exercises

After that time, repeat the exercises that worked best for you.
