Specialised care for young people with autism and learning disability in crisis

We are working with local teams to support young people with autism and/or a learning disability. Some may have experienced extended stays in inpatient units.

Our new approach supports them when they are in crisis with their mental health, helping them to receive care at home and in their community.

We follow National Guidance within the NHS Long Term Plan and the Mental Health, Learning Disability and Autism Inpatient Quality Transformation Programme.  Young people and their families have played a big part in shaping this.

How we help

The Learning Disability and Autism Hospital at Home service enables the young people we work alongside to:

  • Remain in their safe space with a consistent routine and environment. Whilst adjustments may still be needed within their home, they benefit from a familiar environment.
  • Allow greater individualisation of care, minimising any further trauma to the patient.
  • Maintain meaningful human contact with family, friends and connections – within the community and education, where possible.
  • Minimise the risk of experiencing major transitions adjusting in and out of inpatient services. If clinically required, support from our team throughout admission and discharge will help minimise any potential distress and reduce length of stay.

By focusing on the needs of autistic people and those with learning disabilities, ‘at home’ specialised care can be more effective and successful.
