South West Community team strengthened by positive feedback

The team works in the Abingdon, Didcot, Faringdon and Wantage areas and goes out to visit patients in their homes who require help to recover from recent illnesses or for those with more long term conditions to regain some strength and independence or help people to reach their goals such as getting upstairs to sleep after a period of sleeping downstairs.

They also help people returning to walking with only one stick after having broken a hip following a fall or assessing for equipment which may aid people to transfer safely from bed to chair.

One service user said: “I have had great help and encouragement. The lady I saw worked very hard to help me improve and has been very patient and kind to me.”

The team is made up of 20 staff of occupational therapists and physiotherapists including our helpful support and admin staff.

They often see people who have just come out of hospital to aid the transition and a speedy recovery reducing the likelihood of them being readmitted. They also help those who have longer-term conditions or those who are nearing the end of their lives to stay living at home safely and comfortably.

Jessica Deguara, clinical lead, said: “Our team of therapists and support staff work with care and skill to enable patients to live a better and happier life at home. It is wonderful to receive positive feedback to know that people really appreciate and benefit from the work we do, and the team get a real boost to hear this and know it is all worthwhile. Thank you.”

Another patient said: “They listened but also suggested other things to try but there was never any pressure! The regular appointments at home I received when it really mattered, made a difference. Great and kind staff, very worthwhile lots of information towards future planning.”

“I was very fortunate to have a regular visit from my physio over period of eight weeks” said a patient. She said “This encouraged me to persist in my exercises. These I had diligently carried out which has enabled me to progress well in my mobility. The community therapy service is invaluable and has certainly benefited me.”

One last recent reviewer said: “I can’t thank my occupational therapist enough for the approach he takes when coming into my home he is kind and safe. He has listened, talked me through things been empathetic and I am so grateful for all his help. He is a brilliant professional occupational therapist, thank you for having him involved in helping me and my family.”
