Forensic Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services
What we do
Forensic child and adolescent mental health services (FCAMHS) aim to address the mental health and risk management needs of young people in the youth justice system and those presenting with high risk of harm to others.
We help families and professionals support these young people, particularly when there are concerns about mental health or emotional difficulties.
Who we work with
Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust, as a lead provider, coordinates clinical FCAMHS provision across:
- NHS South Central region: Thames Valley, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Dorset
- South West (North) region: Swindon, Wiltshire, Bath & North East Somerset, North Somerset, Bristol, South Gloucestershire and Gloucestershire.
Useful information
Referral criteria
- The young person is under 18 years old
- There is concern regarding the young person’s mental health (incorporating neurodevelopmental difficulties including learning disability and autism)
- The young person presents a high risk of harm towards others
- The young person is in contact with the youth justice system
All referrals should be made via our referral form:
Please include clear reasons for the referral and adequate background information including a basic baseline risk assessment.
Cases within the service are managed via a fluid tiered system:
- Advice only
- Single agency consultation
- Multi-agency consultation
- Assessment
- Assessment plus intervention
We aim to deliver a quick response to the referrer via an initial verbal discussion, at which time we will triage the level of input required according to the clinical need and risk.
Referrals can be made by professionals from all agencies working with young people following discussions with them, their parents or carers. We offer professionals advice and support as well as direct assessment or support to young people.
