Oxford Health team tackle Abingdon 5k to take steps towards £7.5k target
Members of the Oxfordshire Stroke Rehabilitation Unit will be lacing up their running shoes this Saturday to take on the Abingdon 5k.
The OSRU has a team of 15 taking part this weekend as part of a programme of fundraising activity that will hopefully see them raise £7,500 for specialist equipment.
The unit, based at Abingdon Community Hospital, provides specialist rehabilitation for people post-stroke. Over 100,000 people have a stroke each year in the UK and common consequences are people developing weakness in one arm and leg.
All money raised will purchase new equipment which will enable stroke survivors to use their affected arms more independently, and practise their exercises at higher intensity. Both these factors are known to improve people’s chances of recovery.
This new equipment would be an enhancement to the OSRU service and therefore isn’t covered through statutory funding. The team hopes that with the support of the local community and Oxford Health Charity they can purchase the equipment to make a fantastic difference to patients and their families.
