Greener NHS
The NHS national ambition
The NHS is committed to becoming the world’s first net zero national health service. A healthier planet means healthier people.
There are two targets to guide the journey:
- NHS Carbon Footprint (direct emissions): Net zero by 2040
- NHS Carbon Footprint Plus (indirect emissions): Net zero by 2045
The NHS is responsible for around 4% of the UK’s carbon emissions. As one of the largest public sector organisations, we have a unique responsibility and opportunity to lead the way in climate action.
The Greener NHS vision
To deliver the world’s first net zero health service and respond to climate change, improving health now and for future generations.
Oxford Health’s Greener NHS responsibility
Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust plays a vital role in supporting the NHS ambition to become the world’s first net zero national health system.
Sustainability is a legal duty
The Greener NHS emissions targets are part of the Health and Care Act 2022, which makes sustainability a statutory responsibility for NHS organisations.
Making a difference every day
Oxford Health delivers services across mental health, community care, and learning disabilities, supporting thousands of people every day. This broad reach gives us a unique opportunity to lead on sustainability.
Embedding sustainability in everything we do
We are committed to integrating sustainable practices into:
- Clinical care
- Estates and facilities
- Operations and logistics
- Biodiversity and green spaces
- Travel and transport
Small actions, big impact
Everyday changes can help reduce our environmental footprint:
- Switch off unused equipment
- Cut down on single-use plastics
- Encourage active and low-carbon travel
Working together for a healthier future
By aligning with the Greener NHS programme, we can protect the environment, improve public health, and help ensure the long-term sustainability of the NHS.
Our Green Plan
Our Green Plan 2025-2028 is a roadmap to embed sustainability across all areas of the Trust. This will help us achieve the Greener NHS targets and contribute to a healthier planet.
